Bloodline: Season 2

The first season of Bloodline was a bit of a surprise. When it first came out last year, I had no idea what it was & as such no expectations.

It featured a great cast of interesting characters (some of which rightly got award recognition), an intriguing premise & story, great cinematography and good uses of flashbacks. It was however plagued by slow pacing and too many episodes.

This season, was sadly very disappointing & at times really frustrating to watch.

The great cast & cinematography return. The show now has fewer episodes but still suffers from bad pacing and the storyline has took a turn for the worst as it’s loaded with clichés.

The biggest problem with this season is the lack of Ben Mendelsohn. He was without a doubt the best thing about the 1st season. He stole the show… SPOILERS AHEAD… Then his character died. It was a very surprising & interesting development. One which in retrospect should have either ended the series or just not happened.

This year, he returns. But, his role is significantly reduced. His role is at times so small that it feels shoehorned in. Out of the 10 episodes, he probably only has 2 or 3 important/significant scenes. (He’s starring in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story later this year so his reduced role might have been a result of him working on this film at the same time – I’m only guessing).

The only other characters of note are played by Kyle Chandler and Linda Cardellini. Both of them do a good job. Sissy Spacek meanwhile is just annoying.

New characters show up to fill the Mendelsohn void but fail to match his presence.

The story is really frustrating. It’s loaded with Clichés from other crime films & TV shows. It’s too convoluted at times and characters do some silly things. This, plus the slow pacing that only drags out the show, makes it very difficult to watch.

Disappointed is how I feel about Bloodline now. The quality of the writing has dropped significantly. The lack of Mendelsohn makes the show suffer & I’m now very doubtful about the shows future. Luckily the show still has a great cast & it’s gorgeous to watch.
